What is a Light Guide Plate? What is its main function?

A Light Guide Plate (LGP) is an optical lighting plate used for retail display lighting. It converts LED light entering from the edge into a uniform, soft surface light source, helping reduce harsh light, visible light spots and uneven brightness in shelves, display cabinets and refrigerated display cases. It is widely used in product display applications where cleaner and more uniform illumination is required.

What is the difference between a Light Guide Plate and a diffuser plate? Are they used together?

The Light Guide Plate guides and distributes light and helps reduce visible LED shadows. The diffuser plate further softens and diffuses the light. In retail shelves and refrigerated display lighting, they are commonly used together with a reflective film: Light Guide Plate + reflective film + diffuser plate.

What applications are your Light Guide Plates mainly used for?

We support custom Light Guide Plates for a wide range of applications, including commercial retail lighting such as supermarket shelves, convenience stores, beauty and tobacco display cabinets, refrigerated cabinets and showcases; lighting products such as panel lights, cleanroom lights and kitchen or bathroom lighting; advertising and decorative applications such as light boxes, illuminated signs and stretch-ceiling lighting; smart-device backlighting such as industrial displays, education displays and smart mirrors; as well as elevators, showrooms and outdoor lighting projects.

What standard thicknesses are available?

Common thicknesses include 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm.

What material is commonly used for shelf and refrigerated-display lighting?

Optical-grade PMMA acrylic is the mainstream choice for a wide range of applications. It offers high light transmission, clear visual performance and good cost efficiency. It is commonly used in indoor lighting products, retail display cabinets, indoor light boxes and equipment backlighting.

How should the light-entry method be selected for different sizes and applications?
  • For panels up to 600 mm, narrow shelf lighting and smaller luminaires: single-edge lighting is commonly used for a simpler and more cost-effective structure.
  • For panels around 600–1200 mm, longer display cabinets and commercial luminaires: dual-edge lighting is commonly used to improve brightness uniformity.
  • For panels above 1200 mm, larger displays and engineering lighting applications: four-edge lighting can be used for higher uniformity requirements.
Can you customize irregular shapes, curves, holes and cut-outs?

Yes. We support customized dimensions and shapes based on the structure of luminaires, display cabinets, equipment and light boxes. Processing can include holes, slots, cable openings, clearance cut-outs and curved or heat-bent parts. CAD or AI drawings can be provided for custom production.

Which Light Guide Plate process do you mainly use, and what are its advantages?

We mainly supply laser-dotted Light Guide Plates. The laser process does not rely on printing ink and is used to create optical dot patterns for customized lighting performance. It is suitable for commercial displays, lighting products, equipment backlighting and light-box applications where brightness uniformity and stable long-term performance are important.

Will a shelf Light Guide Plate turn yellow or become dimmer over time?

We use optical raw materials together with a laser process that does not use printing ink. Under normal operating conditions, the material is designed for stable long-term use. For special environments involving heat, low temperatures, high humidity or outdoor exposure, material and protection options can be evaluated according to the application.

Can glare and strong reflections be reduced?

Optical configurations can be adjusted according to the project. Low-glare and high-color-rendering options can be evaluated to reduce harsh light, visible reflections and image ghosting in indoor lighting, product displays, equipment backlighting and other applications.

How should dust or minor marks on the Light Guide Plate be handled?

Light surface dust generally does not require aggressive cleaning. Fingerprints and light stains can be gently wiped with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of alcohol, then dried. In normal assemblies, a diffuser film can also help reduce the visibility of minor surface marks.

What information should be provided for a custom Light Guide Plate?

Please provide the length, width and thickness, application, LED strip parameters, non-standard drawings where applicable, and estimated order quantity. Based on these inputs, we can evaluate the material, light-entry method and optical configuration for the project.

Do you support samples? How long does sampling take?

Yes. Custom samples are supported. The sample process follows the intended production method, and the typical sampling period is about 3–7 days.

What is the minimum order quantity? Can you support small-volume orders?

Standard panels do not have a minimum order quantity stated in this FAQ. Customized irregular products can support small-volume orders, as well as recurring volume supply for chain brands and long-term projects.

Can you supply supporting backlight components together with the Light Guide Plate?

Yes. Depending on the project, supporting items can include the Light Guide Plate, diffuser film, reflective film and related masking or die-cut materials, reducing the need for additional processing by the customer.

What is the typical production lead time?

Custom production based on drawings typically takes around 2–3 weeks. Special materials, oversized panels and complex irregular structures can also be evaluated, and production scheduling may be adjusted according to project requirements.

How are Light Guide Plates protected during transportation?

Panels are protected with surface film, separated between layers and packed with reinforced outer protection. Products are inspected before shipment. The source FAQ states that transportation damage can be replaced.

What warranty is provided?

The source FAQ states a 2-year warranty for conventional indoor laser Light Guide Plates. If there are manufacturing quality issues such as uneven brightness, dimensional deviation or process defects, customers can contact the sales team for after-sales handling.
